We Asked! Leah Keller of LK HorseSense

We went out to the field with one of our favorite professionals, Leah Keller,
to ask her why she prefers to feed with feed bags.

Benefits to feeding with feed bags

Here’s just a few of the reasons Leah prefers to feed with feed bags

  1. No fighting
  2. No wasted grain
  3. Helps get them used to having their ears handled
  4. Micro training sessions

How do you use them on your farm?

How do you feed with them?

  1. Leah likes to teach the horses on her farm to come up to the gate to eat
  2. Pro Tip: Flip the horses ears forward to avoid fighting with the headstall

Nervous Horses

How would you train a nervous horse to use a feed bag?

  1. Let them put their face in it, either in hand or on the ground, without trying to attach the headstall
  2. Wait for them to become comfortable
  3. Only then start to teach them how to wear the headstall, loosely at first before tightening.
  4. Consider using a bag with a side squeeze buckle for horses that are having a hard time adjusting

Difficult Horses

What about difficult horses?

Give them as much time as they need

A word on throat latches

Can you talk about why some horses might need a throat latch on their bag?

  1. To prevent them from pawing their bags off
  2. To encourage them to finish what’s being fed

What if my horse wants to drink with it on?

Do you ever have a horse that tries to drink with their bag on?

Yep! Luckily the holes let the water out so they don’t drown!
